The Gardens of Lust - Allusions to sex on Romanian Carpets -

My project was to intervene on carpets (those kind of carpets which are not part of an official Romanian popular culture, but you can find them in the houses of our grandparents, made by our grandmothers). I associated the phallus with the kitsch repertoire of the carpets (excesive colured and crowded shapes), trying to emphasize the dissimulated treatement of Earth Paradise of Pleasure in these carpets. So I drew the phallus directly on the carpets keeping the same style of the carpet in drawing. I only modified the original carpets digitally with these insertions in places I cosidered they could fit.

Romanian people don’t have the Occidental opening in talking about sex. They are shy of talking straight so in some of their cultural achievements mask the subject with symbols and allusions – sexual can be also a certain arrangemet of flowers, bunnies, fruits associated with showy colors and baroque compositions.

Lately, after the 90’s, situation changed, young Romanians are more opened towards an Occidental view of this subject. But here is the point, and here reveals my option. I think the specificity of our culture was that described above, the candor, the dissimulation are more spectacular now than ever, now we can discover our real identity by contrast with the Occidental attitude towards sex.

Idilic representations on the Romanian domestic carpets, doubled by an excesively decorated fairy vision are some of the most interesting examples of dissimulated lustfulness and I think the most spectacular. My role with this project was to unmask the sexual connotative plan and its lechery.
